Smashing Pumpkins nabs second slot

T.I.’s “T.I. vs. T.I.P.” (Grand Hustle/Atlantic) held onto the No. 1 slot on the nation’s album sales chart, selling 175,000 copies in the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Smashing Pumpkins, featuring two of the original members, Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, debuted at No. 2, selling 145,000 copies of “Zeitgeist” (Martha’s Music/Reprise). “Zeitgeist” was the digital top-seller for the week, selling 25,000 copies of the album.

Album debuted at No. 1 in Canada and New Zealand, No. 4 in the U.K., No. 5 in Italy and Switzerland, No. 7 in Germany and Holland and No. 8 in Australia. Band’s last effort, “Machina,” debuted at No. 3 in the U.S. in 2000.

Interpol’s major-label debut, “Our Love to Admire” (Capitol), landed at No. 4 on sales of 73,000. The band’s third album and first for Capitol Records debuted at No. 1 in Ireland and Mexico, No. 2 in the U.K. and top 5 in Canada, Belgium and Holland. Interpol kicks off a U.S. tour tonight in Rochester, N.Y.

Austin rock act Spoon scored its first top 40 appearance, selling 46,000 copies of “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga” (Merge) to hit No. 10. Band’s last album, “Gimme Fiction,” debuted at No. 44 in 2005.

Aly & AJ’s “Insomniatic” (Hollywood) sold 39,000 for a career-best chart position of No. 15.

Among other debuts: The soundtrack to “Hairspray” (New Line) sold 37,000 (No. 20); Bad Religion’s “New Maps of Hell” (Epitaph) sold 21,000 (No. 35); the soundtrack to “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” (Warner Bros.) (No. 43) and Crowded House’s “Time on Earth” (ATO) (No. 46) sold 16,000 each.
