‘Now’ at No. 1 for 12th time

Compilation series strong; 'Hairspray' at No. 4

For the 12th time, the “Now! That’s What I Call Music” compilation series has hit No. 1.

The 25th edition, which includes hits from Avril Lavigne, Fall Out Boy, T-Pain and others, sold 223,000 copies in the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Tally is 3,000 higher than the debut of “Vol. 24,” which was the lowest-selling edition of the series since “Vol. 13” opened to sales of 171,000. “Vol. 24” has sold 1 million copies, its predecessor about 2.3 million.

In its second week, New Line’s soundtrack to “Hairspray” saw a 95% sales spike, up 16 slots to No. 4. Disc sold 72,000 copies to become the top-selling independent label album in the country.

Soundtrack, released July 10, includes three numbers written specifically for the film: “Ladies’ Choice,” “New Girl in Town” and “Come So Far.” Pic opened Friday and grossed $27 million.

Colbie Caillat’s debut, “Coco” (Universal Republic), sold 51,000 copies to open at No. 5, an impressive showing for a young unknown. Disc was assisted by a iTunes offering her single “Bubbly” for free and selling the album at the bargain price of $7.99. “Bubbly” had been played more than 4 million times on her MySpace page prior to its release.

Rolling Stone hailed the Malibu native this year as one of the most promising unsigned artists, based on her music posted on MySpace. She is on tour with the Goo Goo Dolls and Lifehouse.

Yellowcard’s “Paper Walls” (Capitol) opened at No. 13, selling 41,000 copies and missing the top 10 by fewer than 2,000 sales.

Two debuting discs sold 15,000 copies: Rooney’s second album, “Calling the World” (Geffen), opened at No. 42, and Rocket Summer’s “Do You Feel” (Island) at No. 44. Kansas City rapper Tech N9ne’s “Misery Loves Kompany” (Strange Music) sold 13,000 to open at No. 49.

Last week’s chart-topper “T.I. vs. T.I.P.” dropped to No. 3, selling 94,000 copies.
