So far this election cycle, CNN takes the prize for best gimmick with its YouTube debate. But ABC’s “Nightline” is raising the ante.
The newsmag has leased a helicopter — dubbed “The Nightliner” — to ferry co-anchor Terry Moran between stump sessions in the early primary states.
“Riding along in the bus, you’re in the bubble, says exec producer James Goldston. “Getting above and seeing how communities are impacted by that motorcade … you get a sense of the organic beast that a campaign is.”
Sure, “Nightline” could simply deploy correspondents to campaign whistlestops instead of deploying aircraft, but who wants to watch that?
Muses Goldston: “There’s something about Terry Moran leaping into a helicopter and flying off that has a distinctiveness that’s appealing.”
