‘Chicago,’ ‘Poppins’ rejuvenate Broadway

Broadway Grosses

Broadway inched back up from its traditional post-Labor Day plummet last week, with total grosses rising about $750,000 to $13.2 million for 23 shows on the boards.

Most shows saw sales pick up, with “The Color Purple” ($773,770) up $90,000 for the biggest bump of the week. “Chicago” ($417,237) kicked up by around $80,000 and “Mary Poppins” ($825,586) by $75,000.

“Mamma Mia!” ($832,533), “Hairspray” ($630,581), “The Phantom of the Opera” ($578,800), “Monty Python’s Spamalot” ($560,394) and “Avenue Q” ($295,262) were all up by $60,000 or more.

“Curtains” ($686,394), the tuner that surprised many industry watchers after Labor Day when it managed to stay as strong as it did, was up by just over $50,000.

“The Drowsy Chaperone” ($487,005) also rose by more than $50,000, but “Drowsy” remains, like “Legally Blonde” ($573,963), a relatively new tuner whose receipts have sunk lower than expected in recent weeks. (Legiters will be watching to see if “Blonde” gets a boost from the airing on MTV set for the end of the month.)

“Rent” ($262,053) had a particularly tough week, sinking by more than $115,000. Among the other shows to see a decline were “Spring Awakening” (down $44,000 to $612,591) and “Grease” (down $30,000 to $756,849).

Meanwhile: After a few weeks of no straight plays on the Rialto, two new non-tuners — Manhattan Theater Club’s production of Theresa Rebeck’s “Mauritius” ($113,423 for five perfs) and the Roundabout’s revival of “The Ritz” ($93,124 for three perfs) joined the fray last week.

The 21 musicals grossed $13,024,764 for 98.4% of the Broadway total, with an attendance of 170,640 at 77.2% capacity and average paid admission of $76.33. The 2 plays grossed $206,547 for 1.6% of the Broadway total, with an attendance of 4,331 at 69.1% capacity and average paid admission of $47.69. Average paid admission was $75.62 for all shows.
