‘Chicago’ leaves, sales fall

Road Gross

NEW YORK — The road hit a bump in Week 9 (July 23-29), when the 13-show slate dropped 7.84%, bringing it to $13,887,780.

“Chicago” left the road until September, accounting for about a third of the decline, while the Chicago production of “The Color Purple” dropped more than 27% in the first week that “High School Musical” played the Windy City. “Mamma Mia!” also made significantly less in Portland this week than it did during any of its dates in Canada.

Not all of the news was bad — both productions of “The Lion King” continued to gain momentum, with a gain of about $80,000 in St. Louis and $66,000 in Charlotte, N.C.

To no one’s surprise, the third company tour of “Wicked,” in Los Angeles, was the highest-grossing show for the week with $1,673,506.
