Box office feeling ‘Drowsy’

Broadway Grosses

NEW YORK — Broadway grosses went for their usual late-August dip in Week 13 (Aug. 20-26) with total receipts dropping $1.5 million to $16.2 million for 22 shows on the boards.

Not only did most shows diminish at the B.O. to varying degrees, but no longer in the picture were plays “Frost/Nixon,” “Deuce” and “Old Acquaintance,” which all shuttered Aug. 19.

The week was particularly tough on “The Drowsy Chaperone” ($444,149), which fell almost $103,000 — the largest drop of the frame — and played to just 58% capacity.

“Mary Poppins” ($1,065,649) and “The Phantom of the Opera” ($759,911) both slid by nearly $100,000, while “Les Miserables” ($476,592) was off by about $92,000 and “Legally Blonde” ($889,060) was down by around $85,000.

Of all the shows to slip last week, “Xanadu” ($341,527) took the tiniest tumble, falling a negligible $2,000.

Only three productions stepped up sales. “Grease” ($818,991) rose by more than $75,000, proving that its lackluster reviews don’t matter (at least not yet). Meanwhile, Fantasia, who was sick last week, returned to “The Color Purple” ($966,826) to bump up biz by $70,000, and in its final week, “The Year of Magical Thinking” ($215,765) rose by more than $40,000.

“Spring Awakening” ($788,259) was down by just over $30,000 but still held onto its spot in the top 10, which it earned for the first time last week.

Despite the B.O. decline, the week’s cume was still ahead of receipts from about a year ago, when the tally hovered at around $15.5 million for 23 shows on the boards.

The 21 musicals grossed $15,979,238 for 98.7% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 198,485 at 89.8% capacity.

The sole play grossed $215,765 for 1.3% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 3,824 at 70.0% capacity.

Average paid admission was $80.51 for musicals, $56.42 for the play and $80.05 for all shows.
