Legit union Actors’ Equity has named Lauren Ambrose, Byron Jennings and Jay O. Sanders the recipients of its annual acting awards for thesping in classical stage productions.
Ambrose and Jennings won the Joe A. Callaway Award, each year given to one male and one female performer for their work in a classical play in the New York area. Ambrose was honored for her perf as Juliet in the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production of “Romeo and Juliet” this summer, while Jennings got the nod for his work in recently opened Mark Twain comedy “Is He Dead?”
Sanders was given the St. Clair Bayfield Award, which honors a performer in a Gotham production of Shakespeare, for his role as Bottom in the second Shakespeare in the Park offering of the summer, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
Awards, which each come with a $1000 check and a plaque, will be handed out Jan. 11 during an Equity meeting of its eastern regional membership. Judges included journos Adam Feldman (Time Out New York), Harry Haun (Playbill), Michael Kuchwara (AP) and David Rosenberg (Back Stage).
