Obama is bound for Broadway

Fund-raiser aims to woo theater lovers

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama is wooing Broadway, whistle-stopping at the New Amsterdam Theater for a one-night-only fund-raiser Sept. 24.

Before a speech by Obama, event will open with a half-hour presentation of songs and snippets from classic American stage works, performed by creatives with heavy legit credentials. George C. Wolfe (“Angels in America”) directs a group of thesps that includes Christine Ebersole, Jeffrey Wright, Phylicia Rashad and Marcia Gay Harden. Texts are compiled by critic John Lahr, scribe Marsha Norman and producer Jack Viertel.

Tickets start at $250 and top out at $2,300.

Obama supporter Margo Lion (“Hairspray”) presents the event, along with fellow Broadway producers Roger Berlind, Rocco Landesman, Scott Sanders and Tom Schumacher.

Obama has already courted the entertainment industry in Hollywood. Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen hosted a notable fund-raiser for the politico in February. While Oprah Winfrey opened her home for a bash last week.
