New film council sets up four committes

H.K. gov't body names Lam, Wong to lead groups

HONG KONG — The new Film Development Council set up four committees during its first meeting Thursday (May 3).

Film director Gordon Chan, who is also president of the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild, will oversee the support services committee, which will poll ideas from the industry on how best to use the US$38.5 million film development fund promised by the government in the last budget.

Peter Lam, who is chairman of Lai Sun Group and Media Asia, is overseeing the committee for the mainland market.

Hong Kong International Film Festival Society chairman Wilfred Wong will drive the committee for fund approval; and Jack So, who is chairman of the 16-member council, will head the government service committee. So was the former deputy chairman and group managing director for telecom PCCW.

As of now, the government has set aside US$38.5 million to help finance small to medium budget films. It has been proposed that budgets for individual projects shouldn’t exceed HK$12 million (US$1.5 million) and the new government fund would give as much as 30 percent of the production budget, which is a maximum of US$461,538 per project.

The council is tasked with advising the secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology on how to handle the new coin.
