Vietnam’s monopoly national exhib chain MegaStar Cineplex on Wednesday opened two plexes in suburban Ho Chi Minh City, bringing its number to 30 screens.
The state-of-the-art theaters feature elevated seating, giant wall-to-wall screens with eight-track Dolby Surround Sound and plush highback reclining seats. The concessions include a bar and café.
Additionally, the Hung Voung Plaza Complex in Bien Hoa will house the main office of MegaStar Cineplex HQ as well as the offices of sister company MegaStar Distribution, which is the local agent for UIP, Disney Intl. and Sony Pictures Releasing Intl.
A gala opening will take place Sept. 12 and 13 with the bow of “Bourne Ultimatum” and include a Bourne Festival with the unspooling of the first two pics in the franchise.
MegaStar Media is a Vietnamese joint venture between Envoy Media Partners and Phuong Nam Corp.
Envoy CEO J. Edward Shugrue said the partners have two more projects under construction in Saigon South and Da Nang and are planning four more.
