MC ups stake in Castello Lopes

Portuguese media landscape in flux

LISBON — Portugal’s Media Capital, which controls leading private broadcaster TVI and a cluster of radio channels and magazines, has upped its stake in film distrib and exhib Castello Lopes Multimedia from 50% to 90%.

Media Capital is itself owned by Spanish media conglom Prisa.

Castello Lopes has a distribution deal with 20th Century Fox and home video pact with Warner Home Video, as well as being the country’s second largest exhibitor after PT Multimedia’s Lusomundo.

The takeover forms part of a wider shake-up of the Portuguese film and television business, including the upcoming launch of digital terrestrial television and the forthcoming spin-off of PT Multimedia, which reps over 50% of the film exhibition and distribution business, and more than 80% of the pay TV business.
