ROME — Taiwanese helmer Hou Hsiao-hsien will be honored with the Golden Leopard for career achievement at the 60th Locarno Film Festival.
The Asian auteur, who has depicted social changes in contempo Taiwan in sometimes autobiographical works, will accept the nod at the Swiss fest, which runs Aug. 1-11, organizers said.
Hou’s broad body of work includes 1989 Venice Lion winner “A City of Sadness,” 1993 Cannes jury prize winner “The Puppetmaster” and, more recently, “Millennium Mambo” and “Cafe Lumiere.” He’s in post on Paris-set Juliette Binoche starrer “The Red Balloon.”
Locarno topper Frederic Maire praised Hou for “his fundamental questioning of cinematic form and language, his unique and intriguing style, further refined with every film.”
Previous Locarno career Leopard recipients include Jean-Luc Godard, Bernardo Bertolucci, Ken Loach and, last year, Alexander Sokurov.
