Gotham Awards move to Brooklyn

Nair, Bardem retrospectives to play IFC, BAM

One of the earliest events on the kudos calendar, the Gotham Awards, is moving up and out of Manhattan.

The 17th edition of the show will be Nov. 27, two days earlier than last year’s. Under the aegis of the IFP, the awards are moving to Brooklyn’s burgeoning Steiner Studios from their home of several years at Chelsea Piers.

Also new this year is a series of public programs to help promote the nods.

Three of this year’s Gotham Awards Tributes — to Javier Bardem, Mira Nair and IFC prexy Jonathan Sehring — will be focal points for the public programs set for November as a run-up to the awards. A retrospective of Nair’s work will held be at IFC Center, and a showcase of some of Bardem’s early films will take place at BAM Rose Cinemas.

Another venture, a holdover from last year’s Gothams, is a series of screenings of the five nominees for “The Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You” Award at the Museum of Modern Art.

Nominees for the six competitive awards for picture, doc, director, breakthrough actor and actress and “Not Playing at a Theater Near You” will be announced Oct. 22. The kudos, which typically draw a crowd of 1,000 notables from the indie scene, are viewed as the award-season bookend matched the day before the Oscars by the Independent Spirit Awards.

“In developing this year’s event, we thought there was a real opportunity for IFP to be proactive in its desire to rethink how the public engages in awards shows,” said IFP executive director Michelle Byrd. “Instead of being solely about eyeballs on a broadcast, we decided to bring tremendous talents like Mira Nair and Javier Bardem and many of the films we’re saluting directly to the public as part of a monthlong celebration of the year’s best films.”
