France investigates distribution sector

Government probes theatrical releases

PARIS — The French government has launched a probe into competitiveness within the film distribution sector.

The inquiry, launched by the ministries of the economy and culture on Tuesday, will look mainly at theatrical releases, including the number of prints and the length of time that a pic remains on general release.

Anne Perrot, vice-president of the National Council on Competition, will head the investigation, alongside Jean-Pierre Leclerc, a member of the supreme national legal advisory body, the Council of State, and president of the consultative committee on film distribution.

They are to report back to the ministries before the end of the year.
