Czech’s crown ‘King’ for Oscar

Menzel's drama chosen as country's entry

PRAGUE — The Czech Film and Television Academy has chosen helmer Jiri Menzel’s “I Served the King of England” as the country’s entry for a slot in the foreign language category at the Oscars.

Menzel won the statuette in1968, which saw the last gasp of artistic expression before the Soviet crackdown, with the black and white pic, “Closely Watched Trains.”

Menzel’s new film, which brought him out of semi-retirement, spans decades before, during and after World War II.

Pic is a co-production of Barrandov studios in Prague, Magic Box Slovakia, Universal Production Partners and Central European Media Enterprises.

It took the Fipresci critics’ award at Berlin this year, and screened at fests in Cannes, Sydney, Istanbul, Moscow, Edinburgh and Copenhagen.

The deadline for submissions is Oct. 1 and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the foreign language film nominations on Jan. 22. The Oscar ceremony takes place Feb. 24.
