TOKYO — Indie distrib Gaga Communications has announced its 2008-2009 line-up, led by fantasy epic “The Golden Compass,” skedded for a March 1 bow, with co-distrib Shochiku.
Releases in 2009 include “Sex and the City,” based on the Fox show that has become a hit in Japan on DVD; “Onimusha,” a live-action pic based on the popular Capcom game; and “Blindness” by “City of God” helmer Fernando Meirelles.
In 2008, Gaga plans to bow BBC doc “Earth”; Nicolas Cage sci-fi title “Next”; Sylvester Stallone’s comeback “John Rambo”; 3-D adventure “Journey 3-D”; and Jan de Bont car actioner “Stopping Power.
Among arthouse product on offer next year is Harmony Korine’s “Mister Lonely” and Billie August’s “Goodbye Bafana.”
The biggest local pic in the line-up is “Shaolin Girl,” a martial arts epic starring Kou Shibasaki (“Sinking of Japan”) and produced by Chihiro Kameyama and helmed by Katsuyuki Motoyuki — the team behind Japan’s biggest local live-action pic, “Bayside Shakedown,” as well as other hits under the Fuji TV banner.
Gaga is a member of the pic’s production consortium, though Toho will be in charge of the theatrical bow, set for the 2008 Golden Week (late April, early May) holiday.
