Avex travels down ‘Highway’

Firm picks up rights to musical comedy

Japanese firm Avex Entertainment has picked up rights to its first Korean film, musical comedy “Highway Star,” starring Cha Tae-hyun (“My Sassy Girl”).

Deal with Korean seller Studio 2.0 comes as Korean sales to Japan have fallen from 2005’s stratospheric levels. Avex, best known for its music division, re-cently moved into the film industry and is an investor in John Woo’s epic co-production “Red Cliff.” “Highway Star,” about a struggling rock musician conned into singing Korean country music, earned $11.7 million in its local release in February.
