Antena 3 launches movie slot

'La Noche Sundance' will screen indie movies

MADRID — Spanish commercial broadcaster Antena 3 TV has inked with producer-distrib Notro Films to launch “La Noche Sundance,” a primetime slot for indie movies.

The weekly program will be broadcast by digital terrestrial television channel Antena.Neox. Show will be produced by Notro Films subsidiary Notro TV.

The channel will initially air 13 pics that won kudos at festivals — not just Sundance — including Park Chanwook’s Cannes 2004 Grand Prix winner “Oldboy,” which inaugurates the movie offer this Sunday.

Films selected include Sundance special jury prizewinners such as Kenneth Lonergan’s “You Can Count On Me,” Shane Carruth’s “Primer,” Todd Haynes’ “Poison” and James Mangold’s “Heavy.”

Most films were acquired by Notro from sales agent Fortissimo Films.

Two pics — “Oldboy” and “You Can Count On Me” — were picked up from Spanish indie Lolafilms.

“The new program will allow viewers to watch films that normally can’t be seen on TV and whose theatrical presence is scarce,” explained Mikel Lejarza, general manager at Antena 3’s TV division.

Antena 3 TV and Notro execs are studying the launch of themed film seasons under the “Sundance” umbrella.

“La Noche Sundance” could open a new window for indies in Spain, but Notro TV CEO Ignacio Corrales is cautious. DTT still has a long way to go in Spain. With 14.4% penetration, it closed last year with a 4% share of the total TV audience. “Time will tell if DTT becomes a major or minor alternative distribution channel,” Corrales said.
