The Weinstein Co. has acquired North American rights to the drama “Control,” centered on former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis.
Harvey Weinstein announced the deal Monday on the heels of the pic winning the nod for top European film at Cannes. Pic had opened the Directors’ Fortnight.
Photographer and musicvid helmer Anton Corbijn made his feature directorial debut with “Control,” written by Matt Greenhalgh and starring Sam Riley, Samantha Morton and Alexandra Maria Lara. Corbijn, Orian Williams and Todd Eckert produced.
“Control” focuses on Curtis’ last years leading up to his suicide in 1980, the struggle between his love for his wife and his girlfriend, his bouts with epilepsy and performances with Joy Division.
Rights were purchased from Becker Intl. Michelle Krumm and Laine Kline negotiated for TWC with Iain Canning and Joyce Layton for Becker.
