WB speeds up ‘Racer’

Studio moves up release date of tentpole

Warner Bros. has moved the release date for “Speed Racer” forward two weeks to May 9, 2008, and will release the pic day-and-date in most international markets.

Domestic distribution topper Dan Fellman said the move’s designed to give “Racer” maximum playability throughout the rest of the season.

International distrib prexy Veronika Kwan-Rubinek added, “Opening ‘Speed Racer’ day-and-date with the U.S. in most international markets will not only allow audiences to see the film early but will maximize business before the start of the European Soccer Championships.”

Larry and Andy Wachowski are writing and directing “Speed Racer,” which Joel Silver is producing under his Silver Pictures banner.

Universal is scheduled to open “Iron Man” the first weekend in May 2008 and Disney has set its second “Narnia” pic for May 16.
