Variety, museum pair for screening series

Series to showcase award-season contenders

Charlie Koones, prexy and publisher of the Variety Group, and Rochelle Slovin, director of the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, announced on Monday a partnership to launch a series of preview screenings.

The series will showcase award-season contenders.

Q&As with directors, producers, scribes and stars will be moderated by Variety and museum staff, including Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart and the museum’s chief curator, David Schwartz.

The Variety/Moving Image Screening Series runs from June through December and includes 12 films that will unspool at Manhattan venues.

Series opens today with Werner Herzog’s “Rescue Dawn,” followed by a conversation with Steve Zahn to be moderated by Variety assistant managing editor Dade Hayes.

On Thursday, Michael Moore will discuss his docu “Sicko.” Feature “In the Shadow of the Moon” will screen July 19, with director David Sington appearing.

“We are delighted to partner with Variety on this important film series. In addition to the great films and talent, the series will feature a great audience — members of the guilds and the museum,” Slovin said.

Koones, a museum trustee, said, “The museum will bring its programming expertise and its dynamism to this exciting series. They are the perfect New York partner for this important new initiative.”

Excerpts of discussions will be highlighted on V Video at Variety.com. The full program audio will be made available on the museum’s website at Movingimage.us/pinewood and on iTunes.

The Variety/Moving Image Screening Series is presented with support from Indievest.
