Van Dormael prepares ‘Nobody’

Film to be director's English language debut

BERLIN — More than a decade after his hit film “Eighth Day,” Belgian helmer Jaco Van Dormael is prepping the $39 million “Mr Nobody,” his English-language feature debut.

Multi-layered love story is produced by Philippe Godeau’s Somebody Prods., with Germany’s Integral Films and Lago Film, and the helmer’s Belgian shingle Toto & Co. Films co-producing.

“Toto the Hero,” in 1991, was Van Dormael’s first film.

Pathe will distribute “Mr Nobody” in France, with Wild Bunch handling international sales.

Of four main roles only one has been cast, with Canadian Sarah Polley — whose own debut feature “Away from Her” is screening in Berlin — in the role of Elize. Character is one of three women in the life of a 35-year-old man.

Former Warner Independent topper Mark Gill is helping to cast other roles.

“Mr Nobody” is inspired by the “butterfly effect” — the chaos theory notion that the beat of a butterfly’s wings can cause a storm thousands of miles away.

Pic is slated for 25 weeks of shooting, mostly in Belgium but also in Germany and Canada, where some of the action takes place.

“Mr Nobody” is part of a ramped up production slate for Philippe Godeau, in the money after the sale of his Pan Europeene French distribution activity to Wild Bunch.

Also in the pipeline is a live-action adaptation of the comic book character “Largo Winch,” to be helmed by Jerome Salle, which is slated to go into production in the fall.

According to the producers, several Gallic and Belgian broadcasters are circling the project, although it hasn’t been cast yet.

Pan Europeene also is developing “Magic,” a musical love story with Marie Gillain and the French singer Cali, helmed by Philippe Muyl.

Gillain plays a single mum who falls for a clown working for a Cirque du Soleil style circus that has taken up residence in a field next door to her rural home.
