U.K.’s first Russian film fest opens

Event runs to Oct. 3

LONDON — The U.K.’s first film fest dedicated to Russian cinema kicks off Thursday when five recent Russian features play simultaneously at London’s Apollo West End cinema.

The fest, which runs Sept. 27-Oct. 3, offers Londoners a rare opportunity to see contemporary cinema from established young Russian filmmakers.

Pics selected are from the past two years and include Pavel Lungin’s “The Island” and Ivan Vyrypaev’s “Euphoria.”

The Russian Film Festival hopes to sponsor inter-cultural dialogue and 10 Russian helmers will be in London to discuss their work with auds and the Brit press.

Relations between the British and Russian governments have been somewhat strained since the murder by poisoning of dissident Alexander Litvinenko in London last November.

The fest is launched by charitable arts org Academia Rossica, which aims to promote Anglo-Russian cultural links in collaboration with the Russian Embassy in London.
