Tribeca fest staffs up for year-round

Scarlet upped to artistic director

NEW YORK — The Tribeca Film Festival is growing.

A little more than a year since Tribeca announced its partnership with the RomeFilmFest, the six-year-old, Gotham-based event has announced three promotions and one new hire, marking its transition from annual event to year-round business.

Tribeca co-founder Jane Rosenthal has promoted former executive director Peter Scarlet to artistic director, with particular emphasis on international film. Fest vets Nancy Schafer and Paola Freccero will become co-exec directors at Tribeca. Jennifer Maguire Isham, former president of the festival, has been named exec VP of Tribeca Enterprises.

Before moving to the Tribeca festival in 2002, where she has served as Managing Director and Programmer, Schafer created and ran Austin’s South by Southwest fest, and Freccero worked extensively with the Sundance Channel. The posts previously held by Maguire Isham and Scarlet have been dissolved upon their promotions, and all four jobs are both new and permanent.

Rosenthal, who founded the fest with Robert De Niro, said Tribeca would continue to work with the Rome fest, and that it had “been approached by a number of other countries to present the ‘best of Tribeca.'”

Rosenthal noted the reorg was intended less to create events than to enable Tribeca Enterprises to work “in a more consistent manner.” “Practice will hopefully make perfect,” Rosenthal said. “We’re trying to learn from our mistakes.”

The Tribeca fest has hosted a number of high-profile premieres, including “Mission: Impossible III” last year and “Spider-Man 3” this year.
