Japan’s TBS network has unveiled its lineup for the Pusan Film Festival, headed by “Crows,” by cult fave Takashi Miike.
Based on a popular comic, “Crows” is set in a high school where pitched battles between rival punks take precedence over books. The cast includes Shun Oguri, Kyosuke Yabe, Meisa Kuroki and Takayuki Yamada.
Pic will world preem in Pusan on Monday.
Also sure to attract international interest is “After School,” the second feature by Kenji Uchida, whose twist-filled debut “A Stranger of Mine” scooped several prizes at Cannes in 2005. New pic, based on an original script by Uchida, begins with a private detective searching for a missing person but segues into a contest of wits between scammers. Japanese release is skedded for May.
TBS world preems “The Sky of Love” at the fest on Monday as well. That romantic drama is based on a cell phone novel with a readership of 11 million. Some 1.3 million readers snapped up the book, about a girl’s troubled high school years, in just three weeks. Natsuki Imai helms and Yui Aragaki, Haruma Miura and Keisuke Koide star.
Also on the TBS lineup is “The Bandage Club,” a drama by prolific hitmaker Yukihiko Tsutsumi (“Trick,” “Memories of Tomorrow”). Cannes actor nod winner Yuya Yagira stars in a coming-of-age drama based on a bestselling novel. Pic opened in Japan on Sept. 15.
Upcoming TBS films on offer include “The Glorious Team Batista,” Yoshihiro Nakamura’s medical mystery featuring Hiroshi Abe as a heart surgeon whose career inexplicably heads south and Yuko Takeuchi as a hospital investigator who tries to learn why. Japanese release is set for February. Another is Yasuharu Ishii suspenser “The Black Swindler” (working title), based on a popular comic about swindlers who swindle other swindlers. Tomohisa Yamashita and Maki Horikita star, with a Japan release skedded for March.
Further down the line are “Boys Over Flowers: Final,” a school drama based on a popular comic and TV series, and “I’d Rather Be a Clam,” (working title), a drama based on an iconic 1950s TV series about a soldier caught up in a war crimes trial.
