‘Superheroes’ tops Avignon fest

'Komma' takes European feature prize

U.S. audiences may have little interest this fall for Iraq-themed films, but attendees at the 13th annual Avignon/New York Film Festival found plenty to embrace in the category.

Auds at the fest, which wrapped Sunday at Hunter College in Gotham, voted scripter-helmer Alan Brown’s “Superheroes,” which follows a shrapnel-riddled Iraq war vet (Dash Mihok) as he attempts to get through each painful day, the best U.S. feature.

Belgian co-scripter/helmer Martine Doyen’s “Komma,” staring singer Arno as a man mistaken for dead who makes the most of coming back to life, took the European feature prize.  Pic, preemed in Cannes Crix Week in 2006.

The Pierre Salinger Award for Documentary Filmmaking went to “Keepers of Eden” by Yoram Porath.

The Nov 9-18 event, devoted to independent filmmaking, is the Yank edition of the Avignon Film Festival, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in France next summer.
