Strand to release ‘Edge of Heaven’

Multi-storyline film debuted in Cannes

Strand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Fatih Akin’s “Edge of Heaven,” a multistoryline pic that dazzled many critics, as well as the jury in Cannes, which awarded it the Prix du Scenario.

By weaving together stories about six characters, Akin, born in Germany to Turkish parents, explores divergent cultural, generational and class-based points of view. Heading the pic’s cast are Tuncel Kurtiz, a well-regarded Turkish thesp, and Hanna Schygulla, a German star known for roles in Fassbinder films.

“Edge” preemed in Cannes, and the Match Factory has since sold it to more than 60 territories. Pic has already bowed in Germany, where it has racked up 400,000 admissions to date, and admissions in France (170,000) and Turkey (230,000) have been similarly robust.

The movie is Germany’s official entry in the foreign-language film Oscar race. It is also nommed for film, director and screenplay at the European Film Awards.
