Spain

Modern living, stable weather a big boost

The scoop: Spain offers a wealth of historical monuments, stable and sunny weather, modern airports and superb new highways.

Shooting is 15%-20% cheaper than the rest of Western Europe, estimates Jose Luis Escolar of production services shingle Calle Cruzada and line producer on Ridley Scott’s “Kingdom of Heaven.”

Spain boasts some topnotch techies: Set decorator Pilar Revuelta and makeup artists David Marti and Montse Ribe won Oscars for “Pan’s Labyrinth.”

Big broadcasters have begun to co-finance films from name international directors such as Steven Soderbergh (“Guerrilla,” “The Argentine”) and Woody Allen (film title not yet unveiled).

And Spain’s government has proposed 18%-of-investment tax breaks open to producers, broadcasters and nonfilm financial investors.

Bonus: Regional authorities are adding coin for new films. Films shot at Alicante’s Ciudad de la Luz Studio benefit from 12%-18% rebates on local spend in the region.

Shot there: “Asterix at the Olympic Games”

Hot spot: Located near Alicante in eastern Spain, the Ciudad de la Luz Studios will begin second-phase construction this month, which includes a 57,000-square-foot soundstage with a 27-acre backlot. Once finished, it will be able to simultaneously host several midbudget to big-budget productions.
