MADRID — Top Spanish distribution house Sogepaq has taken international rights outside North America and Mexico to Gael Garcia Bernal’s feature film directorial debut “Deficit.”
Produced by Bernal’s Mexico-based Canana production house — the actor is an active producer and distributor in Mexico — “Deficit” premiered to SRO auds at a special screening at Cannes Critics Week in May.
“Deficit” is set at a swimming pool party thrown by the stinking rich Cristobal (played by Bernal). But cracks — personal, social, political — begin to appear beneath the luxurious, moneyed veneer of the event.
Bernal’s debut plays in the Vanguard section at the upcoming Toronto Festival, where Sogepaq will initiate its international sales push.
The “Deficit” pickup strengthens the links between Sogepaq and Bernal, who will topline Mateo Gil’s “Pedro paramo,” which is produced by Sogepaq sister production company Sogecine.
