Summit Entertainment has snapped up “Sensei,” tyro scribe David Caspe’s comedy spec about former teen karate champs, and set it up with JC Spink, who will produce via his Benderspink shingle.
Story centers on a drunk, washed-up sensei at a rundown dojo being challenged to a rematch of a famed 1984 fight by his opponent — an informercial star who’s franchised “Karate Pilates” and opened one of his workout franchises across the street.
Caspe, 27, has switched to a literary career after receiving his master’s degree from the School of Visual Arts in Gotham. His work as an artist and sculptor has been displayed in galleries in Chicago and New York.
Summit’s revamping itself as a full-service studio with an annual slate of up to a dozen pics. Its first release will be horror-thriller “P2” on Nov. 9.
Benderspink’s Jon Silk and Langley Perer brought the project in. The banner’s also producing “Nightcrawlers” at Warner Bros., “Last Voyage of the Demeter” at Phoenix and “Prep” at Paramount.
