Rubin rewriting ‘Time’

Sci-fi romance to be directed by Schwentke

New Line has tapped Bruce Joel Rubin to rewrite sci-fi romance “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” to be directed by Robert Schwentke.

“Wife,” produced by Brad Pitt via his Plan B shingle and Nick Wechsler, has been in development at New Line since 2003, when the minimajor acquired feature rights to Audrey Niffenegger’s novel. “Wife,” which hadn’t been published when the deal was made, went on to become a bestseller.

Novel centers on a Chicago librarian with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, brought on by stress and bad memories. He meets and falls in love with a teenage heiress, but the couple’s often out of sync because of his time traveling.

Rubin won an Oscar for scripting “Ghost”; other credits include “Stuart Little 2” and “Deep Impact.”
