Rotterdam fest head quits

Den Hamer to join Filmmuseum

LONDON — The Rotterdam Film Festival announced Wednesday that its director Sandra den Hamer has resigned to head up the Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands’ respected cinematography collection.

A replacement has yet to be found. The festival said its board would soon start “exploratory talks” for a new director.

Den Hamer joined Rotterdam in 1986 to coordinate the then fledgling co-production market Cinemart. It has since developed into one of the largest financing events for low- and medium-budget film projects in the world.

In 1991, den Hamer was appointed deputy director of the fest under Emile Fallaux. She rose to the position of co-director alongside Simon Field in 2000.

She directed the fest alone from March 2004 onward.

Den Hamer will take up her new role at the Filmmuseum from Sept. 1. The respected cinematography museum houses a collection of pics ranging from the first silent movies to contemporary digital productions.

In addition it organizes thematic programs, retrospectives, festivals and open-air screenings throughout the year.

The Rotterdam festival paid tribute to den Hamer’s work.

“The importance of Sandra den Hamer’s contributions to the success of the festival can hardly be underestimated,” the fest said in a statement.

“Through the years she determined and realized a clear artistic and business course for all festival activities in close collaboration with many international partners and the festival staff,” it added.
