Rome fest nabs Coppola’s ‘Youth’

Director's latest project to debut at festival

Francis Ford Coppola’s highly anticipated “Youth Without Youth” will world preem in an unspecified slot at the RomeFilmFest’s second edition in October.

Starring Tim Roth as a 70-year-old Romanian professor who is rejuvenated prior to WWII after being struck by lightning and whose apparent immortality makes him a target of the Nazis, “Youth” is Coppola’s first film since 1997’s “The Rainmaker.”

“Youth Without Youth” also stars Alexandra Maria Lara, Bruno Ganz, Alexandra Pirici, Marcel Iures and Andre Hennicke. Matt Damon makes a cameo appearance.

Independently financed film marks Coppola’s return to the auteur approach of his first works. Pic is a European co-production of SRG Atelier, Pricel and Italy’s BIM Distribuzione, which will distribute in Italy.

Sony Pictures Classics will release “Youth” in the U.S. and Canada in early December.

Coppola adapted, produced and directed “Youth Without Youth,” which is based on a 1976 novel by Romanian author Mircea Eliade. Pic was shot in Romania with a mostly local crew. Coppola’s longtime editor, Walter Murch, joined him in Romania to edit the film.

RomeFilmFest will run Oct. 18-27.
