Bill Pohlad’s River Road Entertainment has tapped Mitch Horwits prexy of the indie banner.

Horwits will be responsible for day-to-day management along with nurturing and developing River Road’s business, studio and distributor partnerships.

The core executive team, Robin Schorr, Frank Hildebrand and Deborah Zipser, will report to Horwits. Pohlad will continue to provide overall strategic and creative direction.

Horwits was formerly prexy at Spelling Films, overseeing “The Usual Suspects,” “In and Out,” “Bound,” “Night Falls on Manhattan,” “Shadowlands” and “Short Cuts.” In 2000, Horwits joined Constantin Film as a producer and president of the company.

He’s also held exec slots at Universal, Warner Bros. and CBS/Fox Home Video.

River Road’s “Into the Wild” opens this weekend in limited release; “Lust, Caution” follows on Oct. 5, while docu “Chicago 10” goes out in February. Company’s other producing credits include “Brokeback Mountain,” “Fur” and “A Prairie Home Companion.”
