Paramount has acquired Bob Weide’s “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People” for distribution in English-speaking territories excluding North America.
Par is understood to have made an offer for North American rights as well, but was turned down by sales outfit Intandem Films.
Intandem topper Gary Smith said unless a U.S. buyer made an offer he couldn’t refuse, he would prefer to hold onto the rights and do a deal at a later date to distribute the film there for a fee, in order to have a greater participation in the potential upside.
Intandem has also pre-sold the film, which starts shooting in June, to Sandrews Metronome for Scandinavia and RCV in Benelux. Film4, which developed the project with producers Stephen Woolley and Liz Karlsen of Number 9 Films, has U.K. TV rights.
“How to Lose Friends” stars Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst and Jeff Bridges in the satirical tale of an English journalist’s misadventure in the Gotham celebrity scene.
