Monty Westmore, 84, makeup artist

Oscar nominated for work on 'Hook'

Makeup artist Monty Westmore, a member of the third generation of the Westmore family makeup artist dynasty, died Nov. 13 of natural causes in Woodland Hills, Calif. in Hollywood. He was 84.

Westmore was Oscar-nommed for “Hook” and Emmy nommed for “Who Will Love My Children” and “The Late Shift.”

The son of “Gone with the Wind” makeup artist Monte Westmore Sr. and grandson of George Westmore, the younger Monty Westmore began as an apprentice to his uncle, Perc Westmore, head of the Warner Brothers makeup and hairdressing department. He then began working on TV series “Ozzie and Harriet.”

He served as makeup artist for stars such as Joan Crawford, on films including “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” and “Strait-Jacket” and with Paul Newman on numerous films including “Sometimes a Great Notion,” “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” up to “Where the Money Is” in 2000. He often worked with director Robert Altman, on films including “Buffalo Bill and the Indians” and “3 Women.”

Among the films he worked on over 57 years in the business are “Se7en,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Jurassic Park,” “Hero” and “The Towering Inferno.” His last credit was “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced in June that the Westmores of Hollywood would be recipients of a Star on the Walk of Fame in 2008.

He is survived by his wife June, a makeup artist; three daughters; a son, five grandchildren and brothers Marvin and Michael, both makeup artists.

Donations may be made to the George Westmore Research Library and Museum.
