SHANGHAI Shanghai will soon be home to MGM Studio World, a massive new indoor entertainment complex featuring dining, shopping, nightclubs and extensive entertainment facilities, including a cinema.
“This is not a theme park,” said George Wade, MGM’s senior VP and managing director for location-based entertainment. “Our aim was to create a great place for people to hang out, with great tenants and great entertainment.”
Lion signed the licensing agreement earlier this year with Hong Kong based Tengxun Entertainment and Management, which will project manage, and Shanghai Tianhong, which is developing and constructing the 200,000 square-foot leisure center as part of a larger construction project in the Changfeng area of Shanghai.
MGM is the project’s licensor and creative collaborator and will neither invest in nor operate the center, though the MGM logo and images from their film library of around 4,000 titles will be displayed “prominently” throughout the complex, according to George Wade.
“This is our first international leisure center,” he said. “It is significant that we picked Shanghai. Moving into the China market is very important to us, and this is the first step.”
