Seemingly as famous for its picturesque setting as its lineup, Marrakech has earned a reputation for attracting a starry cast of jury members and talent. Last year, Roman Polanski was jury prexy, with the likes of Susan Sarandon, Laurence Fishburne and Martin Scorsese in attendance.
Fest receives ample support from Morocco’s movie-mad King Mohammed, who has also helped to bankroll other film initiatives in the country. Ridley Scott’s “Body of Lies” is likely to be lensing in the country at the time of the fest and organizers are hoping that pic’s cast, which includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, will attend the event.
The event’s program, led by prexy Prince Moulay Rachid and director Melita Toscan du Plantier, reflects Morocco’s own position between Europe and the Middle East, with world preems of Moroccan films bowing next to Western fare.
