Spanish sales consortium Latido Films has clinched a raft of sales on helmer Carlos Saura’s “Fados.”
It has licensed the Portuguese song and dance film to K Films Amerique for Canada; Latino Vision for Mexico and Central America; Distribution Co. for Argentina, Chile and Uruguay; and Amazonia for Venezuela.
Co-produced by Spain’s Zebra Prods. and Portugal’s Fado Filmes, the sumptuous “Fados” records recitals of Portugal’s normally melancholic national song performed by recording artists in and outside Portugal.
The latest deals add to initial sales for France (TF1), and Japan (AMG). U.S. rights are under negotiation, said Latido exec Massimo Saidel.
Latido has just picked up sales rights to Monica Gardenberg’s “O Paio” and the international rights on Catalan auteur Ventura Pons’ stage-to-screen “Barcelona (a Map),” which world premiered at Toronto.
Latido’s lineup also includes Juan Carlos Tabio’s “Horn of Plenty” and Ana Diez’s “Paisito.”
“Fados” will have a special screening at the 55th San Sebastian Film Festival as part of the Zabaltegi Pearls sidebar, in the recently revamped Victoria Eugenia Theater on Friday.
Three fados singers — Mariza, Camane and Carlos do Carmo — will perform after the movie.
San Sebastian closes Sept. 29.
