Gucci, Tribeca team for fund

Docu filmmakers to get $80,000 for projects

Gucci and the Tribeca Film Institute are launching a documentary fund to help filmmakers finish projects deemed to have social significance and a lack of mainstream media attention.

A total of $80,000 in grants will go to at least three filmmakers and will be administered by the Tribeca Film Institute. Recipients will be picked by the institute along with Gucci and a selection committee of doc makers to be announced.

The new initiative underscores Gucci’s growing emphasis on docs as well as film restoration and preservation, the fashion company said. It is the second completion fund for docs set up by Gucci, following a partnership formed in February with the Ambulante Film Festival to support the work of three Mexican filmmakers.

For the Tribeca fund, filmmakers will have to to submit a proposal along with a trailer, scene assemblage or rough cut. Submissions open on Feb. 5 and must be postmarked by April 11. Recipients will be announced in summer 2008.
