Disney inks deal with Stan Lee

Contract includes all forms of entertainment

Disney has inked an exclusive first-look deal with “Spider-Man” creator and producer Stan Lee and his production company POW! Entertainment.

The multiyear contract calls for Lee — whose film-friendly characters include the Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Daredevil and Silver Surfer — to develop and produce all forms of entertainment for all Disney divisions.

“Stan is considered one of the most creative and inventive forces in the industry today,” said Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook. Disney home entertainment prexy Bob Chapek was instrumental in landing the deal and will work closely with Lee on future projects.

“One of the most beautiful things about the arrangement is that we can do movies, television, DVD, publishing — you name it, Disney does it,” Lee told Daily Variety. As for upcoming projects, “I can only say we’re working on a number of things, and the one common denominator is they’re all high-concept projects,” offered the comics kingpin, “and hopefully, they’ll all lend themselves to being great franchises. Also, they’re all going to be new and original. The whole purpose is to come up with new things, and Marvel owns the old characters anyway. That’s what makes it fun for me; if it was just resuscitating old things, I wouldn’t have been that interested.”

At 84, Lee said he has no problems relating to current auds raised on high tech.

“Kids don’t change. The surface values change, but the intrinsic qualities don’t. The human condition doesn’t change, and people, no matter what their age or situation, respond to a really good story with characters they can believe in, which is replete with surprises. As long as we can keep coming up with that, I don’t think there’ll be a problem.”

Upcoming for Lee is Fox superhero sequel “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”
