Colombian helmer Andi Baiz, whose debut pic “Satanas” is vying for a foreign Oscar nom, will direct his next pic in English for U.S. indie Stick n’ Stone Prods.
“Babylon,” written by Ian Stone, is an action drama set in Jamaica. This is the first screenplay by Stone, a second assistant director on various Steven Spielberg pics including the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and on Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood.”
Budgeted at $5 million to $6 million, Stick n’ Stone producers Mickey Barold and Stone Douglass are scheduling the shoot for next spring or fall, depending on weather conditions on the Caribbean island. Casting is under way with plans to use Jamaican unknowns to play the locals.
Described by Barold as “Maria Full of Grace” meets “City of God,” story tracks an asthmatic boy who is used as a mule by drug dealers.
