SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain — Andalusia is ramping up its film production.
The region produced three pics in 2005 and 12 in 2006; for 2007, the Andalusia Film Commission has registered 19 features.
In terms of film and TV business, Andalusia is Spain’s third busiest region after Madrid and Catalonia.
In 2006, public institutions, including pubcaster Canal Sur, dedicated e10.1 million ($13.5 million) to supporting regional film and TV. Figures were announced Tuesday at the San Sebastian Film Festival during the second Andalusian Audiovisual Day.
Carlos Rosado, general manager of the Andalusia Film Commission, announced it hosted 863 audiovisual projects in 2006, 33.6% more than the year before.
Jose Antonio del Saz, general secretary of regional pubcaster RTVA, defended avoiding a culture of dependence on subsidies in favor of competition and market-driven practices.
At the Andalusia Day, Carmelo Romero, director of Malaga Markets, announced the new dates for the event: Nov. 30-Dec. 3, 2008. It will integrate under one umbrella all Malaga market events, including Malaga Screenings, Mercadoc, TV Market and Art TV.
“Growing concentration in the production sector means more producers combine film, TV and documentaries in their slates. So we need one fixture,” Romero said.
Huelva Iberoamerican Film Festival director Eduardo Trias announced at the Andalusia Day that it will pay tribute to Spanish actress Maribel Verdu. Also presented: a deal inked with film bookstore Ocho y Medio to launch “Ultramar,” a film book collection.
Most successful Andalusian productions of 2006 included “Summer Rain,” “Heart Lifting” and “Dog Head.”
