Out and about in Berlin

Night and the city: A heady combination

It’s no secret that Berlin is one of the party capitals of the world, with more bars, lounges and clubs in some districts than other cities have in their entire municipalities.

The city’s liveliest districts remain Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Schoeneberg, where bars don’t close until the last customer has stumbled out the door.

Just down the street from the hustle and bustle of Potsdamer Platz is the stylish Victoria Bar, which offers fine daytime and evening dining, a wellstocked cocktail menu and a pleasant atmosphere for that out-of-the-way meeting.

A relaxing drink can be had at a number of watering holes near the festival center in Schoeneberg, including the Zoulou-Bar, a small atmospheric joint with a funky vibe. Green Door, near Nollendorfplatz, serves up a fine array of cocktails and boasts an enormous and impressive menu.

For wilder surroundings, Kumpelnest 3000 gets down and dirty on a nightly basis with a mixed gay and straight crowd.

Across town in Kreuzberg, the bustling Cafe Bar Morena and, right across the road, Madonna, with over 100 whisky choices, offer a genuine feel of classic Berlin haunts.

Further east, the club scene picks up at locations like the WaterGate, Maria am Ostbahnhof and Berghain, where allnight parties are the norm.

Situated on the bank of the Spree River, the upmarket WaterGate boasts a mixed crowd, with music ranging from R&B to house and drum-and-bass and a scenic view of the city across the water.

Maria, located in an old warehouse, boasts popular DJs spinning electronica sounds.

In Berghain, anything goes. With its hip Panorama Bar, it’s the place to go if you don’t want to sleep: A densely mixed crowd moving to techno-esque beats offers plenty of distractions.

Up in Mitte, check out the Week-End Club, located on the 12th floor of a highrise on Alexanderplatz and enjoy a great view of the city.

For a taste of Berlin underground, Rio offers the city’s only electronic rock club with a diverse lineup of hot international artists and live bands.
