Al-Ali upped to artistic director

LONDON — The Dubai Film Festival has tapped Masoud Amralla al-Ali as artistic director.

Al-Ali was previously artistic director of Arabic programming at the fest and was the coordinator general of last year’s inaugural Muhr Awards, the richest prize celebrating excellence in Arab filmmaking.

Dubai is bidding to become the premier showcase for Arab cinema. Fest’s fourth edition unspools Dec. 9-16.

Event officials also opened calls for submissions for the second annual Muhr Awards honoring best Arab feature, docu and short. Total prize money for the kudos is $325,000.

Last year Djamila Sahraoui took the feature nod for “Barakat!,” a road trip through Algeria during the civil war of the 1990s.
