1967: Sammy spreads the love

Rat Packer joins Jeannie, Monkees

Jan. 12, 1967:
GOOD MORNING:
How about this for a bargain basement? Sammy Davis Jr., guesting in “I Dream of Jeannie” on Columbia’s Stage 14, was setting such high wah-wah marks on the sound meter, it prevented “The Monkees” lensing — in the studio located below the stage. So, Davis, who was filming his number “live,” went below, did an unskedded walk on with the Monkees, singing “Tomorrow’s Gonna Be a Better Day.” A mob of 200 came over to catch the Davis double bill before he winged out for the Sands … Bob Culp and France Nuyen are Vegas-bound to see Davis — plus partner Bill Cosby who bows at the Flamingo tomorrow. The desert will be swinging this weekend … Bob Wagner, at Universal lensing added scenes for his pilot, “It Takes a Thief,” looping “Running” and prepping “Don’t Just Stand There,” but first plays the Pebble Beach golf tourney next week … (2007 Update: The Columbia lot was bought and is now the busy Sunset-Gower lot where CEO Bob Papazian continues to oversee the multi-million-$ refurbishing and enhancement of the studio’s 12 stages plus a six-story 96,000 square foot state of the art building that will become the home of Technicolor’s post-production facilities by year’s end. He recently honored Barbara Eden by dedicating the sound stage where she shot “I Dream Of Jeannie” for five NBC seasons starting in 1965. Barbara , who has been touring in “Love Letters,” guestars in the new “Army Wives” series … Among the additions Papazian is readying is an 80-seat screening room to be named “Harry’s Place” in honor of you-know who. (For you newcomers–he’s Harry Cohn).)
