‘Stomp’ trumps ‘Museum’

Screen Gems film takes in $26.4 million

The long weekend boosted grosses across the board on Monday, leaving the order of finish on the box office chart pretty much intact.

Sony and Screen Gems’ “Stomp the Yard” remained in first place with a four-day opening gross of $26.4 million, followed by 20th Century Fox’s “Night at the Museum” with $21.5 million, Sony’s “The Pursuit of Happyness” with $11 million, Paramount and DreamWorks’ “Dreamgirls” with $10.2 million and Par’s “Freedom Writers” in fifth place with $8.8 million.

With a total weekend gross of $156 million, according to Nielsen EDI, the new year continued to outpace last year’s grosses. So far in 2007, the $382.5 million in ticket sales is 5% ahead of the 2006 total through this point.

There was some position shuffling on the bottom of the chart, however. Debut of Universal’s “Alpha Dog” swapped spots with the studio’s “Children of Men.” For the four-day frame, “Alpha” came in at No. 6 with $7.6 million, while “Men” finished seventh with $7.4 million. Disney’s “Primeval” stayed at No. 8 with a $7.0 million four-day bow.

With school closings for Martin Luther King Jr. Day helping family pics, U’s “The Good Shepherd” was pushed out of the top 10 by a trio of kidpics. The Weinstein Co. and MGM’s “Arthur and the Invisibles” came in at No. 9 with a $5.8 million four-day debut in wide release, followed by Par’s “Charlotte’s Web” with $4.9 million in its fifth frame and Lionsgate’s “Happily N’Ever After” at No. 11 with $4.5 million in its soph sesh.
