German arthouse theaters are riding on an upwind, according to a study by national funding org FFA.Last year, tickets sold at arthouse box offices rose by 18% for a total of 17 million tickets. The increase noticeably surpassed that of the increase at theaters in total, which was 7% with 136 million tickets sold. Also, the number of arthouse screens nationwide rose by 9% to 660 out of a total 4,800 screens in the country. The study underlines the trend towards arthouses becoming multiplexes in their own right. By the end of 2006, some 78% of arthouse theaters were operating with more than one screen.
