‘Flash Point’ shines at Chinese box office

Yip's film brings in $1.98 million

HONG KONG — Helmer Wilson Yip’s actioner “Flash Point,” starring Donnie Yen, has set the Chinese box office alight.

Pic grossed RMB15 million ($1.98 million) in its first three days of release, according to its Hong Kong production and sales house Mandarin Films.

The film was released Friday by Poly Bona, China’s leading non-state-controlled distrib, on 500 prints, making it the biggest opening of a Chinese movie so far this year.

It topped “Secret,” the directorial debut of Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou. “Secret,” a romantic drama, reached a cume of $2.44 million in its first week after opening on Tuesday, according to producer Edko Films.

“It hasn’t been an easy summer for Chinese-language films in China, so we’re thrilled with the numbers,” said Virginia Leung, senior distribution manager at Mandarin.

“Flash Point,” which played in the Cannes Market and will also unspool in Toronto’s Midnight Madness program, was licensed for North America by Distant Horizon.
