‘Brothers’ opens strong

Tan's feature takes Chinese box office

First-time helmer Alexi Tan’s “Blood Brothers” had a strong opening in mainland China, taking in ¥22 million ($2.9 million) between its opening on Aug. 16 and Sunday.

Upbeat result comes after the Taiwanese actioner’s disappointing start in Hong Kong, where distrib Golden Scene said the pic took in $77,541 its opening weekend.

“Blood Brothers” was produced by Terence Chang’s Lion Rock Prods. and John Woo and inspired by Woo’s “Bullet in the Head.”

Pic, starring Liu Ye (“Curse of the Golden Flower”), Daniel Wu (“The Banquet”) and Tony Yang (“Ming Ming”), is a cautionary tale about three youngsters from the countryside who land in Shanghai in the 1930s.
